About the Great North Run 2026:

Every year, over 60,000 runners fill the streets from Newcastle upon Tyne to South Shields, taking part in one of the most iconic running events in the world, the Great North Run.

Whether you’re a seasoned runner chasing a personal best, or taking on your very first half marathon, this is your chance to be part of something unforgettable. The Great North Run isn’t just about crossing the finish line, it’s about the atmosphere, the emotion, and the electric sense of togetherness that makes it truly unique.

As you set off from the heart of Newcastle, you’ll be surrounded by a sea of determined faces and cheering crowds that line the route from start to finish. You’ll run across the famous Tyne Bridge, with the Red Arrows soaring overhead, and hear the unmissable “oggy-oggy-oggy” chants that fill the air. Every mile is an experience, from the live music and street bands to the incredible support of spectators who come out in their thousands to cheer you on.

Since its beginning in 1981, the Great North Run has captured the imagination of runners across the globe, uniting people of every age and ability. It’s not just a race; it’s a celebration of determination, community spirit, and making a difference, whether that’s achieving your fitness goal, ticking a marathon off your bucket list, or fundraising for a cause close to your heart.

In 2026, the event marks 45 years of Great North Run magic, a milestone that promises to be bigger, louder, and more inspiring than ever before. This is your moment to be part of history.

Don’t just watch the Great North Run, run it, feel it, and live it.

Join thousands of runners and create memories that will last a lifetime.

JOIN THE CHALLENGE

If you’d like a place on this challenge (and we hope you do!), we ask participants to pledge to raise £350 for The Natalie Kate Moss Trust - enough to pay for a half day of research on a three-year project – enabling world-leading researchers to discover more about preventing and treating brain haemorrhages.

We’ll be with you every step of the way, from sign-up, all the way to the finish line.

We’ll also provide:

  • A warm welcome + support: tips, fundraising insights and guidance to kickstart your journey and get the most out of your challenge.

  • A fundraising pack. We’ll send you a pack full of fundraising tips and awareness spreading resources.

  • A running vest. Receive a technical running vest so supporters can shout your name to give you a boost!
